For Bustorff Ferreira Vinhos

Bustorff Ferreira is a new brand of low intervention Douro wines. It is a family-owned business that devotes its time to wine production for 3 generations.

The client owned at the time 2 local typical donkeys (Burros de Miranda) and had for a while the ideia of naming the wines after the donkeys. Estrela, the older donkey, would name the more expensive reserve wines. Pardala, the younger donkey, would name the also younger wines.

The creative process kickoff — shared between me and the illustrator Carolina Maria — started with the design of the labels. We thought we had a nice chance to mention Eadweard Muybridge’s 19th-century sequences and have the donkeys move in a simple animation. Having animated labels gave us the means to portray and differentiate the old and young donkeys by their look, but also by their movement.

Making animated labels was a joy and a added value to the wines imagery, the kinetic factor makes the wines catch attention online very easily, but it also works really well on the hands (you know, the real world outside our screens). For one the donkeys can be seen all around the bottles, making them very recognisable. And as we humans have imagination, the movement of the donkeys is apparent (on that regard the alcohol consumption might help a bit).

At some point we made a short film to present the project to the world in all  it’s authenticity. This film is the main focus on this page, as it combines most of the best work we did. #WIP
